"Free Easy Ideas on Saving Money"

Gifting: Santa’s Secret Shopping List

Can you smell it?  That wonderful air of excitement?  That flurry of energy as the holidays rolls in?

The bells are ringing, drawing you into the fray.  The old, familiar carols are playing, putting a bounce in your step.  And, if you’re brave, you’ll even belt out a few tunes of your own.

It’s true — Christmas and the entire holiday season can bring out the best in us.  It taps into our generous spirit.  Reminds us to think of others and their needs.  And, let’s be honest.  Christmas, in particular, gives us an excuse to feel like a kid again!

But, for many, this joyous season can add more stress to an already-full schedule.  It may mean extra cooking, cleaning and shopping (not to mention a longer wait in line at the store.)  It could try the patience of a saint, no doubt about it.

If that sounds like you, you’ll be glad to know there’s a way you can save time, energy and money despite the flurry of activities.  A simple list is all you need. (Remember, even Santa makes a list and checks it twice!)

Make your efforts provide double-duty by targeting both giving *and* receiving.  After all, will you really enjoy dusting all those new knick knacks if you’re not into these items?  And, others may feel the same way.

Create Your Own Gift List

To get started, take a sheet of paper and draw a line (or fold) down the center of the page to create two columns. On the top left half, write in *Needs;* on the top right half, write in *Wants.* Write your items into your list in the appropriate spot. And next to each item, place the person’s name.

It’s a good idea to add expensive items to your list, too. Always let others know when you’re looking for more costly items,  They may not purchase these items for you, but they may know where you can find them at deep discounts, or lead you to them.

A few years ago, I wanted a porch swing and decided to wait for the end of season sales. I put the word out to my friends. But in late September I was still searching.  It looked as if I’d missed the boat.

Happily, a friend spotted one — and wrote down the address and price for me.  I purchased it that day — brand new, in the box with no parts missing. I finally had my porch swing, and at a perfect price.

Use Your List to Simplify Your Life

If your family exchanges gifts, send them a copy of your list. You can even mail or email it. For bigger items on your list, the family may pool their money and make a purchase (or find a fantastic deal for you.)

Keep a copy of your list at work for gift exchanges. Simply pull a few items from your list so coworkers have an idea of your preferences.

Remember, you can use your list for events throughout the year as well.

Make Your List Do Double Duty For You

Flip your page over and make a ‘cheat-sheet’ of friends, coworkers and family members. As you discover items they like/dislike, write these items next to their names.

Create a tab named *Gifting* in your calendar or planner. Insert your list behind it. Update it as you come across tidbits related to names on your list.
