How To Say Goodbye To Your Boss: Sample Letter

It’s no secret. If you’re fortunate to have a great boss, you are indeed blessed. Unfortunately, good bosses find greener pastures and move on, too. But, does that mean you must buy a nice gift and move on?

Not at all. In lieu of gifts, why not write a personalized thank you and goodbye message to the boss? It doesn’t have to be fancy or complicated. (It’s as easy as writing a thank-you card or note–something we’ve all done.)  It will take only a few minutes of your time.

To keep it simple, you can write your letter by hand. Write it on stationery for a special touch. Or why not write it directly onto a goodbye card for the boss?

Using the guide below, you’ll be crafting your own letter of goodbye to your boss in no time at all.

“Dear Boss…

I just heard the good news. Congratulations to you! I can’t think of a more deserving person.

While this is great news for you, it will leave an empty space in a few hearts here at work. I’m sure you realize that.

You know, not every boss is regarded as highly as you. Which got me thinking… What is it that makes one boss more special than the others?

Although I can only speak for myself, here are a few of the reasons I appreciate you…

• You saw me as a human being, in an age where so many employees are viewed as ‘resources.’ I can’t even describe what a difference that has made for me. I can tell you this, though. It kept me getting out of bed to show up at work each morning.
• You treated me fairly and allowed for a true partnership between us. I’ve worked 60-hour work weeks when needed. And not once did you hesitate to send me packing when my young son was sick at day care.
• You took the time to ask about my children. You remembered that I work to support them. You even asked how young Conner’s surgery went. And, if I recall, you asked me if I needed a few extra days off work to care for him. Sara just had a birthday, and you didn’t forget her, either.
• You helped me get back on track when I returned to work from maternity leave. You recognized my challenge with lack of concentration — and you helped me deal with it — without calling attention to it. You moved me forward until I was back in the groove. You never said a word about it, but you knew I still wanted to be at home with my newborn.

For these special moments (and others too numerous to name), I thank you for being there for me. I confess, I envy your future employees (don’t tell them — they’ll find out soon enough.)

I wish you and yours my very best, Boss. And who knows? It’s a small world, really. One day soon, we may just meet up again.
